Ventura, California · Designing since 2002

Your customers are local.
Your brand should not look borrowed.

Nondescripts is one person in Ventura who has spent more than two decades on identity, websites, print and packaging. Not an agency, not a marketplace, and not somebody in another time zone who has never seen your building.

Who this is for

You built a real business. The brand did not keep up.

Most local businesses do not have a brand problem on day one. They have one on year eight, after the logo a friend made got stretched onto a truck, the menu got redesigned by whoever was available, the website was built once and never touched, and the signage, the invoices and the Instagram all quietly stopped agreeing with each other.

Nobody names it. Customers just trust you slightly less than the work deserves, and you cannot point at the reason.

This fits
An established operation with real revenue, more than one customer touchpoint, and a growing gap between the quality of what you do and the quality of how it looks.
This does not
A brand new business that needs one logo and nothing else. That is a real need and there are people who serve it well for less than this practice costs. I will tell you if that is you.

Being nearby

Most of this could be done from anywhere. Some of it should not be.

I am not going to pretend that proximity matters to a logo file. It does not. Most design work moves over shared files and scheduled calls, and it is better for it.

Where being here earns its keep is anything physical, where the screen lies:

  1. 01

    Press checks

Ink on paper is not the color on your monitor. Standing at the press when the first sheets come off is the difference between a run you accept and a run you pay for twice.

  2. 02

    Signage and environment

A mark that works at 400px works at 400px. Whether it reads from across a parking lot, in this light, at that height, on that wall, is a question you answer by going and looking.

  3. 03

    Packaging and materials

Substrate, weight, finish and how a thing feels when someone picks it up. None of that survives a PDF, and specifying it from a swatch library is how packaging ends up feeling cheaper than the product inside it.

  4. 04

    Seeing the actual business

Walking a restaurant during service, or a job site, or a showroom, tells you things no brief contains. It is also the fastest way to find the gap between how a business sees itself and how it presents.

Businesses in and around Ventura.

A restaurant, a construction company, and a community advocacy campaign. Different sectors, same method.

The obvious question

Why not the cheaper option?

Sometimes you should. A logo contest or a template site will get you something for a few hundred dollars, and if the business is new and the stakes are low, that is a reasonable trade.

It stops being reasonable at the point where the brand has to hold across a dozen surfaces without you personally checking each one. Cheap work does not come with a system, so every new thing is a new decision, made by whoever is available, and the drift you are reading this page about is exactly what that produces over five years. The second version always costs more than the first, because you pay for it twice and lose the recognition you had built in between.

Before you ask

The questions local owners actually ask.

Do you actually meet in person, or is that just on the website?
In person for the things that need it. A press check, a signage survey, a walk through a space before its identity gets designed, a first meeting when the project is large enough to deserve one. The rest happens over shared files and scheduled calls, because that is genuinely better than a standing weekly meeting nobody wants.
How far do you travel?
Ventura County without question. Santa Barbara County and Los Angeles County regularly. Beyond that it depends on what the visit is for, and I will tell you plainly if a trip is not worth what it costs you.
I am a small local business. Am I too small for this?
Possibly, and I will say so rather than take the work. The practice is built for businesses with real revenue and a brand that has drifted behind it. If what you need is one logo and nothing else, there are people who do that well and cost less, and you should use them.
What does it cost?
Scope is fixed and the investment is priced in a written proposal after we talk, once I understand what is actually wrong. No figures are published because a number without a scope attached is how projects go bad. The Snapshot costs nothing and requires no call, so you can find out what my read is worth before any of that comes up.
Who does the work?
I do. There is no team, no account manager, and nothing gets handed to a junior after you sign. That is the whole model, and it is why the practice takes on a limited number of engagements at a time.
